Professional Security needs Professional Training

Training Objectives:

REQUIRED BY MARYLAND STATE POLICE (12Hours)

  • SG-1 Identify the requirements for receiving and maintaining a security guard certification in  the State of Maryland. 
  • SG-2 Identify the limitations to receiving and maintaining a security guard certification in the State of Maryland.
  •  SG-3 Given various scenario, demonstrate the ability to identify elements of a given crime,  using the annotated code of Maryland and/or the Digest of Criminal Laws. 
  • SG-4 Identify the legal limits of a security guards' authority to arrest and/or detain a suspect. 
  • SG-5 Define what constitutes use of force. 
  • SG-6 Identify when use of force is authorized and prohibited.
  •  SG-7 Identify the reporting requirements a security guard must complete force is used.  
  • SG-8 Identify the legal ramifications for security guards and their employer when force is used. SG-9 Define what constitutes de-escalation.  
  • SG-10 Identify how time, distance, and cover can be used to de-escalate a situation.  
  • SG-11 Identify the role of communication in de-escalating a situation.  
  • SG-12 Identify the limitations and requirements for a security guard carrying weapons.
  •  SG-13 Identify techniques that a security guard may employ when encountering an individual in crisis. 
  • SG-14 Identify techniques that a security guard may employ when encountering an individual with a disability

ADDITIONAL TRAINING REQUIRED BY MPSLP (16-32Hours)

  • Discuss proper use of vehicles on the patrol landscape
  • Identify how to use vehicles as a deterrent
  • identify ways that local pd can benefit from an onsite security officer
  • Discuss how to operate mobile handheld and vehicle mounted radio devices
  • discuss weapons retention
  • Given a practical scenario, demonstrate the ability to retain weapons and radios and call for help
  • Identify what information is required when notifying 911 of a crime or emergency in progress
  • Discuss the promotion pathway
  • Identify potential sources of company and client liability
  • Demonstrate an ability to deliver exceptional written communication via Daily and incident reports
  • Demonstrate an ability to investigate an incident and discover if additional resources are required
  • Demonstrate an ability to liaison with Local PD FD and EMS
  • Demonstrate an ability to address scenarios where the media has arrived.
  • Discuss sensitive Cultural, Religious, Racial, or Gender based events and how to promote safety during divisive incidents. 


SUPERVISOR TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR MPSLP (80 Hours)

  •  SPO 1 Identify the requirements for receiving and maintaining Special Police Commission in the State  of Maryland.
  •  SPO 2 Identify the potential consequences if a Special Police Officer performs official duties without a  valid Special Police Commission from the State of Maryland. SPO 10 Identify why Special Police Officers, both on and off duty, should exemplify the highest ethical  and moral standards. 
  • SPO 3 Identify basic criminal law concepts (level of suspicion, felony, misdemeanor, warrant,  warrantless). 
  • SPO 4 Given various scenarios, demonstrate the ability to identify elements of a given crime, using  the annotated code of Maryland and/or the Digest of Criminal Laws 
  • SPO 5 Identify the legal requirements to lawfully detain a person. SPO 6 Identify the legal requirements to make a lawful arrest. 
  • SPO 7 Identify basic juvenile law concepts. 
  • SPO 68 Identify a juvenile offender’s rights regarding parental notification and telephone calls upon  being placed in temporary custody.
  •  SPO 8 Demonstrate advising a person of their rights against self-incrimination. 
  • SPO 20 Identify “chain of custody” and why it is important. 
  • SPO 9 Identify basic search and seizure concepts. 
  • SPO 11 Identify the procedure to apply for and serve an arrest warrant. 
  • SPO 12 Identify the legal requirements to conduct a stop or search based on evidence of cannabis. 
  • SPO 19 Identify the consequences of Special Police Officer actions that are not legal.

  • SPO 64 Demonstrate safe and effective use of a restraint device on a non-compliant subject, including  moving the suspect to the recovery position. 
  • SPO 65 Demonstrate a safe and effective method to escort a suspect from premises. 
  • SPO 66 Identify methods for preventing in-custody deaths.
  •  SPO 67 Identify procedures for searching vehicles before and after transporting prisoners. 
  • SPO 69 Demonstrate safely placing, securing, and removing a prisoner in a vehicle.
  •  SPO 70 Identify the general structure of the Maryland court system.
  •  SPO 71 Identify situations when a Special Police Officer may testify in court, such as arraignment, bond  review, trial, and appeal. 
  • SPO 72 Identify a Special Police Officer’s pre-trial responsibilities and procedures 

Training Hours

 Our Officers are trained by approved Maryland Security Guard Instructors who deliver training in Maryland's required Initial Training Course for 12 hours.

Our Officers then complete our in house 10 Hour training course before an additional 6 hours of field training, with a field training officer is completed.


 When you encounter an officer from MPSLP, you're encountering someone with a minimum of 28 Hours of training.   


Our Armed officers complete an additional 16 hours of weapons training for a minimum of 44 Hours of training.  


Our supervisors go on to complete Maryland's Special Police Officer (SPO) Training and have received over 124 Hours of training.
